Asheboro hosts NC Parents as Teachers conference

Parent educators from across the state gathered at Caraway Conference Center in Asheboro September 29 and 30 for the Parents as Teachers Fall Conference.

More than 45 North Carolina parent educators were present, including Amanda Ratliff of Franklinville Parents as Teachers, Kendell Huneycutt of Randleman Parents as Teachers, and Jennifer Mendoza Beasley of Liberty Parents as Teachers. The two-day conference allowed the parent educators to learn about new program initiatives and to share challenges and successes with one another.

Parents as Teachers, funded locally by the Randolph County Partnership for Children with assistance from the United Way of Randolph County, is a family literacy program serving at-risk families with young children under the age of five.

As part of the program, parent educators conduct home visits, working with children and their parents to ensure children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. A primary emphasis of the program is to increase the amount of time parents read to their children and to encourage parents to increase their own levels of education.  Parents are also invited to monthly parent meetings to learn new skills and connect with other families.
